D12 stands for Dirty Dozen or Detroit 12. D12 consists of 6 of Detroit's finest MC's. Every members has an alter ego. The original idea for D12 came from Proof, while they were driving back from New York in a car. They made a undergound ep, when they were signed with Re-Al, but Paul Rosenberg, Em's manager, thought it would harm future sales.
